| Personality Despite being only fourteen years old, Katara is the designated “mother” of a renegade band of teens helping the Avatar on his quest to end the war with the Fire Nation—sort of like a Wendy to the Lost Boys. Because of her background, she has a maturity that’s not present in most kids her age. She is kind and compassionate, but can also be a bit of a nag if she feels as though she’s not being listened to. As a waterbender and a warrior, she is a fighter by nature, and courageous to a fault. She’ll go to any means necessary to break peoples’ stereotypes of what she is able to do. She’s fiercely competitive. Loyalty is possibly her strongest attribute. She will do anything and everything to protect and help her friends—and she extends her protection and generosity far beyond that, often helping complete strangers from opposite ends of the world when they need it. She swears that she will never turn her back on people who need her. Katara’s fearless—but she can be impulsive too, and this can get her into compromising situations. She can be quick to anger, particularly if the right people push her buttons. She’ll freeze someone out in the form of a grudge, if they cross her or try to harm what’s precious to her (although she is capable of forgiveness, down the line). She also has a fondness for fortune-tellers and singing hippie nomads, and is a complete sucker for a cute baby, even if he happens to be from the Fire Nation. |
Abilities Waterbending is made stronger in an individual by the power of the moon. Katara can “bend” the element of water in any of its forms, which means that she can control it according to her will; this includes liquid water, ice crystals, and fog/vapor. The size of the body of water makes no difference—she can act on an ocean’s waves as easily as she can fashion slicing blades from her own armpit sweat. Her powers don’t end there; at a later point, during a full moon, she masters bloodbending, which is exactly what it sounds like—controlling the water in a person’s body, in the form of their most copious fluid, and making them do her bidding. Bloodbending is a lethal weapon in Katara’s arsenal of powers. She also has healing abilities, which are tied into her waterbending. Using her water she can heal superficial wounds and abrasions (such as burn marks, cuts, bruises). She has healed worse injuries, such as the damage to Aang’s back that he received from Azula’s lightning; but that was with a particular water she’d obtained in the North Pole, from a holy shrine called the Spirit Oasis, and most likely the water had healing powers all of its own. One of her main psychological strengths is her willingness to be the cohesive glue that holds her group together—she encourages teamwork among the kids, optimism, personal responsibility, and occasionally even having a bit of fun. |
| Background Because her mother died when she was young, growing up in the icy South Pole (Southern Water Tribe) with her brother Sokka and her father Hakoda, Katara took on many of the matriarchal responsibilities of her family and of her tribe as a whole. When their father left to go to war against the Fire Nation, Katara and Sokka were left in the care of their grandmother, and given the task to look after the young and elderly of their tribe. Upon meeting Aang, and realizing he is the long-absent reincarnated Avatar, Katara and her brother volunteer to leave their home, and accompany Aang on his quest to learn waterbending (and other forms of bending) from a master. Ironically, Katara’s fledgling waterbending powers progress dramatically during the first season, and at the end she is pronounced as a Waterbending Master herself, by members of the Northern Water Tribe. In the beginning Katara harbors a deep hatred for the Fire Nation; not just because of the war, but because her mother was killed years ago during a Fire Nation raid of the South Pole. But along the way, through the group’s adventures, Katara’s feelings change. She realizes that, like members of other tribes and nations, not all Fire Nation citizens are good, but neither are they all evil. She learns to respect individuals wherever encountered, and even befriends (by the end of the series) the banished son of the Fire Lord, Zuko, after he has spent half the series chasing the Avatar for his own personal gain. |
